Kidney stones (also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are the hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. Kidney stones form when your urine contains more crystal-forming substances – such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid – than the fluid in your urine can dilute. At the same time, your urine may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form.
Each year, more than half a million people go to emergency rooms for kidney stone problems. It is estimated that one in ten people will have a kidney stone at some time in their lives.Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions and certain supplements and medications are among the many causes of kidney stones. Kidney stones can affect any part of your urinary tract – from your kidneys to your bladder.
A kidney stone usually will not cause symptoms until it moves around within your kidney or passes into your ureters (the tubes connecting the kidneys and the bladder. If it becomes lodged in the ureters, it may block the flow of urine and cause the kidney to swell and the ureter to spasm, which can be very painful. Pain can also be accompanied with fever, nausea and vomiting. Other symptoms are presence of blood in urine or urine that smells bad or looks cloudy.

What are Kidney Stones?
Kidney stones are hard collections or crystals of salt and minerals often made up of calcium or uric acid. They form inside the kidney and can travel to other parts of the urinary tract.
What leads to the formation of Kidney Stones?
A kidney stone forms when too much of certain minerals in your body accumulate in your urine. When you aren’t well hydrated, your urine becomes more concentrated with higher levels of certain minerals. When mineral levels are higher, it’s more likely that a kidney stone will form.
What are the signs and symptoms of Kidney stones?
- Pain or burning sensation while urinating
- Blood in the urine
- Cloudy or smelly urine
- Sharp Pain in the back, side, lower abdomen or groin area
- Nausea and vomiting
Other symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, profuse sweating, and diarrhea or constipation
What are the ways to prevent kidney stones?
The different ways to help prevent kidney stones are:
Drink plenty of water: Drinking lots of water dilutes the substances in urine that lead to stones. It is also advised to include some citrus beverages (like lemon or orange juice) because citric acid helps block stone formation.
Eat calcium rich foods: Dietary calcium binds to oxalate in your intestines thereby reducing the amount of oxalate that gets absorbed into the bloodstream and then excreted by the kidney. This lowers the concentration of oxalate in the urine, so there is less chance it can bind to urinary calcium. That leads to decreased risk of kidney stones.
Reduce sodium: A high-sodium diet can trigger kidney stones because it increases the amount of calcium in your urine (limit total daily sodium intake to 2,300 mg).
Limit animal protein: Eating too much animal protein, such as red meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood, boosts the level of uric acid and could lead to kidney stones. A high-protein diet also reduces levels of urinary citrate that helps prevent stone formation.
Avoid stone-forming foods: Beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, and most nuts are rich in oxalate, which can contribute to kidney stones. If you suffer from stones, you should avoid these foods or consume them in smaller amounts.
How are kidney stones diagnosed?
Kidney stones can be diagnosed by using blood/urine tests and procedures, such as:
Blood tests. Blood levels of calcium or uric acid should be tested. Too high levels indicate high risk for kidney stones.
Urine tests. The 24-hour urine collection test may be carried out to show whether you're excreting too many stone-forming minerals or too few stone-preventing substances.
Imaging. Imaging tests may reveal kidney stones in your urinary tract. High-speed or dual energy computerized tomography (CT) may reveal even tiny stones. Simple abdominal X-rays are used less frequently because this kind of imaging test can miss small kidney stones. Ultrasound, a noninvasive test that is quick and easy to perform, is another imaging option to diagnose kidney stones.
Analysis of passed stones. You may be asked to urinate through a strainer to catch stones that you pass. Lab analysis will reveal the makeup of your kidney stones to determine what's causing your kidney stones.
What is Kidney Failure?
Kidney Failure is a condition in which the kidneys lose their functionality. In simple terms, they lose the ability to remove waste and balance fluids.
What are the signs and symptoms of Kidney Failure?
Early signs of kidney disease may include:
- Decreased urine volume and change in its colour
- Fluid retention that leads to swelling in limbs
- Shortness of breath
Other symptoms may include:
- Excessive drowsiness or fatigue
- Feeling cold at all times
- Persistent nausea
- Lack of appetite
- Confusion
- Pain or pressure in your chest
What is dialysis and when is it required?
Dialysis is a treatment that is needed when your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body's needs. When you lose about 85 to 90 percent of your kidney function and have a GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) of <15 (end stage kidney failure) dialysis is required.
In dialysis a machine is used which filters and purifies the blood. The machine (a large machine or a portable catheter bag) performs the function of the kidneys.
